Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.

Germanna Community College is currently seeking a Dean of Science and Technology. The dean is a leader and champion in the areas of assessment, accreditation, and curricular and teaching innovation. The dean reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development in support of the goals and mission of the college. This 12-month administrative faculty position recruits, recommends for hiring and manages full and part-time faculty with duties such as completing classroom observations for evaluation, overseeing strategic planning documentation, serving as the primary contact for credit instruction with the adjunct workforce, and assisting with day-to-day issues that support instruction. This position works collaboratively with teaching faculty to assure the highest level of quality and student success.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for reviewing credentials and salary placement.
  • Monitoring the scheduling process and assisting with college wide events such as adjunct convocation and student awards ceremony.
  • Leads the creation, maintenance, revision, or deletion of curriculum, courses, sequences of courses and programs of study offered by or within the College in the Arts and Sciences area and collaborates with the Dean of Career Technical Education and Workforce Development in relevant areas.
  • Manages all activities related to that curriculum (including periodic assessments, required reporting, state and other agency approval processes, and accreditation/licensure requirements). · Works in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences and the academic administration assistants to monitor and assist with the scheduling process to meet student and program needs, efficiencies, and effectiveness of course scheduling, and assignment of faculty in classrooms and scheduling courses that balance seats with student demand.
  • Provides leadership for the disciplines offering credit and non-credit courses in the division as well as the department chairs: Math, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Geology, Physics, Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science and Cybersecurity.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • An earned doctorate degree in higher education and at least a masters in a discipline housed in Arts and Sciences or doctorate in a related Arts and Sciences discipline from a regionally accredited university.
  • Demonstrated understanding of education programs and academic assessment at the college level.

  • Ability to manage administrative assistants and associate dean.
  • Demonstrated experience in new program development and program review.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and maintaining partnerships with four-year institutions for transfer.
  • Ability to identify and coordinate grant resources to support program development and special projects.
  • Understanding of scheduling efficiencies.
  • Ability to provide leadership oversight for faculty mentoring.
  • Ability to collaborate with Student Affairs on student success strategies and student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience with curriculum development, assessment, accreditation, knowledge of academic policy and procedure, problem solving.
  • Demonstrated experience in remote and online learning.
  • Demonstrated classroom excellence at the college level.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Artificial Intelligence tools.
  • Demonstrates commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff, and students.
Additional Considerations
  • A doctorate in a discipline within the School of STEM, higher education or related field.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Progressive and extensive experience in building collaborative relationships with four-year colleges and universities, high schools as well as employer partners.
  • Progressive experience in college administration at the community college level.
  • Current experience in designing transfer programs that promote student access and success through stackable academic pathways.
  • Experience in faculty development.
  • Experience with curriculum design and instructional methods in varying delivery modes (virtual, hybrid and in person).
